What llms.txt is

llms.txt is a short Markdown file at the root of a site that tells AI tools what the site is and where its most useful pages are, in a form they can read quickly without wading through menus, scripts and ads. It was proposed in 2024 at llmstxt.org and is popular with documentation sites, developer tools and software companies.

It isn’t an official standard, and it doesn’t control anything: to allow or block AI crawlers, use robots.txt. Think of llms.txt as a well-organised index you hand to an assistant, which is most useful when someone asks one about your product or points it at your docs.

The format

  1. # Name: the only required line.
  2. > Summary: a blockquote with the key facts.
  3. Optional paragraphs or lists with details (no headings).
  4. ## Sections of links, each written - [Title](URL): notes.
  5. A section named ## Optional for links that can be skipped.

The generator writes exactly this. Importing from your site uses each page’s title and meta description, so pages with good descriptions produce a better draft; trim it to the pages that really help someone understand and use your site.

Publishing it

Upload the file as llms.txt to your site’s root, so it opens at https://your-domain/llms.txt, and serve it as plain text or Markdown. Some sites also publish llms-full.txt with the full text of their docs in one file, and Markdown versions of pages at the same address plus .md.
