How the sitemap generator works

Enter your site’s address and press Crawl. Cloudhim’s server reads your home page and robots.txt, then follows the links it finds to other pages on the same site, a batch at a time, until it has read every page it can reach or hits your limit. It obeys robots.txt and doesn’t submit forms or log in. Then it keeps only the pages that belong in a sitemap:

  • pages that answer 200 OK (not redirects, errors or missing pages),
  • that aren’t marked noindex, in a meta tag or an X-Robots-Tag header,
  • whose canonical address is themselves, and
  • that robots.txt lets search engines crawl.

Everything left out is listed with the reason, which is a quick audit of your site in itself. Already have a list of addresses? Choose “Paste a list of URLs” instead; that part runs entirely in your browser.

What to do with the file

  1. Upload sitemap.xml to your site’s root, so it opens at https://your-domain/sitemap.xml.
  2. Add Sitemap: https://your-domain/sitemap.xml to robots.txt; the robots.txt Generator can add it.
  3. Submit it in Google Search Console (Sitemaps) and Bing Webmaster Tools.

A static file goes out of date as you publish. If your site runs on WordPress, Laravel or another CMS, a sitemap the site generates itself (WordPress has one at /wp-sitemap.xml) stays current automatically; use this tool for static sites, to check what search engines can reach, or as a starting point.

lastmod, changefreq and priority

Google uses lastmod when it’s consistently accurate, and ignores changefreq and priority. The generator takes lastmod from the page’s Last-Modified header or your existing sitemap when there is one, and leaves the other two out unless you ask for them. One sitemap file holds up to 50,000 addresses and 50 MB; larger lists are split into several files plus a sitemap index.
